The Situation

The client required remediation and management of a petrol pipeline leak in a residential area in Durban, South Africa.

Approach

Advisian investigated, designed, implemented, and managed remediation of the petrol leak from a pipeline in a residential area in Durban. The project entailed:

  • Site investigations and delineation of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL)
  • An emergency response system to contain the plume
  • A groundwater/LNAPL extraction system, comprising 1022 extraction wells, header pipe system, storage tanks, and oil/water separators and air strippers
  • Monitoring and sampling of the soils and groundwater
  • Monitored natural attenuation

Results

Over 1.5 million litres of petrol was removed, and all measurable free phase was removed within five years. All engineering aspects of the project were managed by Advisian.
