Venetia Underground Project copy

Providing environmental project management and Owners team representation for the De Beers Venetia Underground Project in Musina, South Africa.

The Situation

Venetia mine is South Africa’s largest producer of diamonds. De Beers began excavation work for the underground extension of the mine in 2013, which plans to extend the life of the mine to 2046. The new underground mine is the biggest single investment in the country’s diamond industry in decades and is scheduled to begin production in 2022, with full production in 2025.

The underground mine will treat about 132 million tonnes of ore containing an estimated 94 million carats over its life.

Our Approach

Advisian was employed to manage the environmental aspects of the Venetia Underground Project in the role of an Owners team representative.

This included contractual management of the environmental assessment practitioner, management of stakeholder relations, governmental and authorisation processes, the development of environmental material for AngloAmerican (De Beers shareholder) assurance reviews and board approval and the development of the environmental knowledge area to meet the requirements of Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).

Results

By providing support to the client to ensure all legislative permits, licences and requirements are in place, De Beers achieved the necessary permission to operate Venetia Mine which is the flagship mine of De Beers' South African operations.
