Advising on site selection and layout mapping for the development of solar facilities throughout South Africa.
The Situation
SolarReserve is a leading company in the renewable energy sector, developing utility-scale solar power projects. They provide solar to South African commercial and industrial entities to help reduce energy costs, carbon footprint, and provide budget certainty.
South Africa has one of the best solar resources in the world, and SolarReserve contracted Advisian to advise on the site selection and layout mapping for the development of photovoltaic and concentrated solar power facilities throughout South Africa.
Approach
Advisian provided a multi-criteria based GIS analysis to identify optimal sites for construction of renewable solar infrastructure. With an initial scope covering the Northern Cape and Free State provinces, this was later expanded to include all South Africa.
The scope criteria included environmental and social informants, services infrastructure and land use and ownership investigations to determine the optimal location for the establishment of plants to generate renewable energy and to ultimately tie into the existing electricity network.
Advisian was responsible for data management, detail mapping and layout planning of the selected sites.
Results
Through the screening process, recommendations were made to the client that allowed them to pursue the acquisition of these identified properties to ultimately construct solar plants.
